Accessible Date: a Night Full of Pizza & Music

Accessible Date: a Night Full of Pizza & Music

It’s a Thursday night in mid-Missouri, and we’ve got a hot date planned with the person of our dreams. This person is a wheelchair user, so there’s just one obstacle we’ve got to work with: places that aren’t accessible. However, we’ve put our brains together and devised a night full of food and entertainment — all of which can be found at places that are easy to maneuver between.
We start out the night with a trip to MidiCi — a hip new pizza joint right in downtown Columbia with plenty of space to move around. As you enter the restaurant, you approach a circular counter to order your food. While the counter is blocked off by metal rods on the sides, there is still plenty of room for a person in a wheelchair to navigate.

The drink station is pretty high, so we might have to help them getting their beverage.  We pick a low-sitting table on the side of the restaurant, so we have the option of pulling the wheelchair up to the side of the table or simply moving a chair so that they can sit across from us. After our food is brought to us and we’ve finished eating, it’s time for round two!

After we leave MidiCi, we head to the roof of the Broadway Hotel — located just a block from the restaurant. Once we take the ramp from the sidewalk into the lobby, we head inside the elevator and go straight to the top — and we’re in luck! The Roof has live music on Thursdays when the weather permits, so we pick a table with a view, sit back and enjoy the band. Even if the weather is a little less than perfect, we can head through the wide doors to the indoor section of the Roof, which features more open spaces with low tables and plenty of seating options.

After the band finishes their set, we decide it’s time for some privacy. We head to my apartment, Brookside Downtown, which is just a few blocks from the Broadway. As we walk and roll through the streets, we get to enjoy the nice night and discuss the great music we heard.
Once we arrive at my apartment, we decide to make stop at the Brookside hot tub for some alone time; thankfully, there’s a wheelchair lift that makes it accessible. Following that, we are able to take the elevator up to my apartment, where we can comfortably travel side by side in the spacious hallway  — and that concludes our perfect date!
